Yasothon was formerly known as Mueang Yot Nakhon, which has a long history since in 1814 during the reign of King Rama II. He was graciously pleased to change the name of Sing Tha Village to Yot Nakhon City, with the first ruler of the city named Phra Sunthorn Rajawongsa which at that time, Thailand ruled in an absolute monarchy. And Yot Nakhon was still a small town in Ubon Ratchathani province only. Later, during the reign of King Rama 7, there was a revolution in Thailand until the democratic regime was changed by the People's Party in 1971 and some large districts were divided into provinces. Thus, Yot Nakhon was designated as Yasothon Province on March 1, 1972. Yasothon became the 71st province in Thailand out of all 77 provinces by allowing the Deputy Governor of Ubon Ratchathani Province to become the governor of Yasothon Province since then.
